Basics of Barware

It’s time we said it… the eye-balling and finger stirring needs to stop. We’ve got you covered on some essentials that deserve to call your bar cabinet “home.”

Time to talk barware!

Let’s be real here; at some point or another, we’ve ALL put together our own makeshift at-home bartending kits. It’s nothing to be ashamed of, but it probably isn’t one of your proudest moments either. Have no fear, though; we’re here to help! With just a couple must-have items in your beautiful bar cabinet, you’ll be crafting cocktails like a pro in no time.

Let’s start with a very important basic–

m e a s u r i n g

We know, we know... sounds like a no brainer, right? But it’s incredible the number of times this is one task is fu*#!d up. The right amount of spirit in your cocktail can make or break the flavor, and we want it to make it every time!

Some common rookie measuring methods:

  • JUST EYEING IT: You may THINK you know what one or two ounces “looks” like, but trust us when we say… no. Eyeing it can leave you with too much (*shivers*) or too little (*sighs*) spirit in your drink. Need we say more?

  • COMMON KITCHEN MEASURING CUPS: These will get the job done, yes, but why take the time to even out a measuring cup and carefully pour your spirit into it while bending in a weird shape to see the lines from counter level? Sounds like a lot of work.

  • SHOT GLASSES: Ah, yes, our sweet, sweet shot glasses. We wish that every shot glass was made with the same measurements, but alas, that’s not always the case.

Guess what?! There's a specific tool for this, and it's called a JIGGER. Plain and simple to use, for exact pouring measurements every time without the extra effort. Allll the cool bartenders are using them these days.

And for another very important basic–

s t i r r i n g

There’s no debate when it comes to a cocktail that’s well stirred versus not. That moment of shock when you hit the brick wall of alcohol in your poorly stirred drink is unmatched, and we don’t wish that upon annnyone.

Some common rookie stirring methods:

  • A KNIFE: We can’t even believe that this is on the list… but it is. There’s clearly so many problems (and safety hazards) with this idea, which is why we’re not even going to elaborate.

  • THE CLASSIC LIFT AND TWIRL: Public service announcement: picking up your drink and twisting it like a tornado is not an effective method to actually mix your drink. It might help a *little* bit, but it has the potential to spill, and there are better ways.

  • A NORMAL SPOON: Yes, this could work, but when the spoon is too short, it becomes a sticky mess… and no one wants to deal with that.

The solution? A bartender certified STIRRING SPOON, made specifically for all your stirring needs. Not only is it cute, but it’s also effective. Its long stem and perfect size mean less mess and better cocktails, what more could ask for?!

Having just these two simple items is sure to raise the ~bar~ in your at-home bartending experience and will make crafting cocktails that much easier! Not only that, but your friends will be thoroughly impressed with your skills and their drinks ;) Stay tuned for more tips!

Cheers!
